Canoeing with the Cree, by Eric Sevareid, is an account of a journey undertaken by two high school gradutes in 1930 to canoe from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay, 2,250 miles of rivers, lakes and difficult portages before the winter freeze-up.

An excellent read and one you'll find difficult to put down!
