Last weekend it was Lin’s birthday and we decided that it would be nice to camp and paddle on the river Wye for the bank holiday weekend. So after a few phone calls we set off very early sunday morning to get to the Wye valley about midday.

We found a camp site next to the river right at the toll bridge so it was easy to find. Then we set up camp before hitting the river.

This is our new tent a 1970’s army command tent. We was testing the design before we make a new one in real tree polycotton.

Then Stu set up the tipi

Before we set off down the river from Hay on Wye (stunning little place)

It was out first time in the canoes with the dogs Lin took sophie and I took empi. Getting the dogs in the canoes took some doing as they took one look and ran off lol

Sophie didn’t chill out at all and kept wanting to jump in the river for a swim, or jump into my canoe

Empi chilled out eventually

The river was stunning

With the odd riffle throw in

The obligatory brew stop

Cant have a blog without sheep

The toll bridge where the camp is

up the steps and home

Testing my new folding BBQ…….ooohhh it was great. As a BBQ

Then as a fire

The next day we had a mess about in a k***k

After this I got out and hugged my canoe lol

Then lin and Helen decieded that they had done enough paddling and waved Stu and I off down the river with a plan to pick us up in a few hours about 5/6 miles down the river
As we set off the wind picked up and changed direction into our faces….it was a killer. At one point the wind was blowing us backwards up river even tho the water was moving along pretty fast beneath the canoes.

Coooooooo’sss

Stu in the 16 footer

Looks good other than the wind in our faces it was like a wind tunnel

The very next bridge was our get out, It was only a few miles but it could not come soon enough with the wind.

It is a stunning river but you have to keep your whits about you as there was plenty of nasty S bends with strainers hiding around the corner. Already planning the next trip down the river.

Cheers for reading.

Great TT there, like the mint green colour. On C-waV kayak is perfectly acceptable term we have a few members that paddle them . Smile

I might even be having a go in a c1 slalom boat tomorrow night

Greg
Hi Greg, nice TT and some very nice pics, pleased to see you adhering to the Brew Stop Tradition, joy The Wye is a River for me to do, from what you said about the strainers makes me think I might need a bit more river experience of the Trent kind first,Dunce Liked the look of Stue's 16' canoe
The Dogs seemed to settle down OK, I was quite surprised just how many people take dogs in their canoes, Haven't got a dog, will have to train my Ferret, lolWhistle
Regards Bill
Ok whats TT ???

Greg <<<<< feeling a bit thick at the moment Rolleyes
Hi Greg

TT is Trip Tale - same as a blogg, just different name.

Welcome to the forum by the way Wave
Welcome Greg and what an excellent TT, Good to see stu out promoting the Apache's, excellent boat with an excellent back up service, Andy.
Excellent TT and pics Greg, thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
The Wye does look very nice and picturesque, and a river I wouldn't mind visiting at some stage.
Great TT Greg nice to see the Apaches on the water, off for a 5 day camp on the Wye end of May with "H" and the 16 ft Ivory (think these ivory ones are much faster than green !!!!Whistle
ps like the look of the command shelter spent many a night in those on Salisbury plain
I love all the pictures Firebreather, it is the only way I get a sense of what paddling is like out there, and you certainly seem to make the most of it too. That tent to me looks like something out of the American Civil War and it, along with the other tents I‘ve seen on this forum, never cease to amaze me as there would just never be enough space where I live to pitch one... and yet I'm jealous.

Thank you for being another who appreciates sharing pictures on a great TR Greg!!!!

P.S. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding just what the hell you people are trying to say, but it’s only the expressions and colouful metaphors that throw me off.
Excellent,

This shows what tripping is all about
Great Blogg

I understand we are allowed to say kayak on this site!

Hi Greg,

What are "strainers". Don't think I like the sound of them whatever they are.

If you're old enough to remember the world before tea bags you'll know the concept of a tea strainer. Now think of your canoe as a tea leaf and you'll get the general idea. Sad Not good news as like a tea leaf you can find yourself trapped.

Ohh, I'm old enough. Didn't think I would like them. So if you did have the misfortune to get into one, how do you get out?
