What's the biggest canoe you could sensibly paddle solo, yeah for sure I could hop in a 20ft'er and paddle it, but in a big swell high winds what's the real size.
My own solo is 14.6" but at the same time I paddle my 16 ft, solo in all conditions no problem.
I've paddled an 18ft, but it was difficult for anything other than v. short sections in the wind.
I'd say 16ft is a 'sensible' maximum...

58ft 30+ tonnes, and I paddled it today...
well not really paddled because it had an engine...
and not actually a canoe more of a barge...
and not really solo because it had a skipper...
I'll get me coat..
The Disco 119 is mine, the other two are Gavins, perhaps you didnt realise we had three
I would have thought that a 16 footer was probably the longest that could be paddled comfortably in most conditions, again with no wind and a flat calm lake you could paddle a 20 footer if your paddling style was effective, personally I think a 15 footer would be ideal as an all round boat.

Although iv'e not been paddleing long compared to most, i chose a 15ft canoe as i would mostly be on my own and every now and again anna and the dog would join me, so far it seems to fit my requirments perfectly. So agree with Graeme, 15 footer would be ideal as an all round boat.
Andy.
Hi Paul
Long time no hear how are tricks?
I do like this part
Quote:if I'm coaching sometimes I will take a 17 ft, depends on how many passengers I pick up on the way down the river
LMAO

Hi there yourself.
All goes well. Just about to embark on the 7 week Summer Scheme at the LOPC in Leicester, but escaping to the Island of Milos for a spot of sea paddling in August.

Would you like someone to carry your bags? May have my sea kayak back by then as well it is out on loan for a 165 mile charity paddle at the moment.

Mmmm. that seems a long way. How long are they taking for the trip?
John, bless him who is paddling the trip on his own and camping out over the trip is starting from around the Trentham Gardens area of the Trent on the 25th July and is hoping to reach the Humber estuary the following weekend, he is training heavily at the moment and on average he is paddling 20 miles a night after work, that is what I call dedication.
I will be putting a post up with some links to the charity which is a hospice in Newark shortly.
The boat he will be using is a 15' Dagger Charleston.

Having done the 100 mile Canoe Challenge that Clubs for Young People do each year, I congratulate John on the challenge he has set himself.

When John aproached us after being recommended to us by the BCU, he had not paddled a boat for over 25 years. Heather took him under her wing and he now holds the new BCU 2* award and has a really good paddling style, he then joined Lincoln Canoe Club that has a lot of sprint and marathon paddlers and has excelled himself with his achievment.
I am sure that he will do well and I can see a fast time for the trip, I hope we can raise a lot of money for the charity.

Depends on actual hull shape, technique and available strength on the day. From personal experience:
15' in very strong wind is do-able, if only for an hour or so at a time. And you have you accept, you may need to get there the long way round.
15' in strong winds more than do-able but as above and it's tiring.
16' 8" in same winds_ just about for maybe 30mins and I didn't get anywhere near point B. Though I briefly visited points J,D,Y,D,H,I,T,D,H,K,U,T,S,L and Y on the way.
