Not on a canoe but I know sea kayakers often have water proof deck mounted compasses like this one

There's no reason you couldn't mount one to the a canoe if I was a sea paddler I am sure I would get one.

Yup, I had a deck mounted compass on my sea kayak.
Didn't really use it that much though, used a silva compass more often and still do when I'm paddling at night or on large open water in the canoe.

it would be of use in fog, weather on a river, canal, lake, both large & small as well as coastal paddling but not much use on white water, it is also standard bit of kit for all types of navigation weather it be land, lake, river,or sea & even in the air (flying).

I thought you said it wouldnt be much use for WW

Sure you could make use of one on a river, canal or small lake, can't really see the need being so regular on that type of water (especially in the UK) that a small pocket compass would be far more suitable.

Better still a mobile phone with GPS, then at least you can ring and give your position

Where's your sense of adventure.
One of the best laughs I've had paddling was getting mis placed on Thirlmere in thick fog. It was only when the sun started to break through that I pointed out to my paddling buddy Retro that it should have been behind us rather than in front. This was a good excuse for a brew stop and watching the sun break through.

Personally I have a pocket Silva compass with me as a rule along with a map.
