Hi.

I've got a solo boat - Mohawk 14ft. I'm about ready to fit a kneeling thwart, but where to fit it?

I'm happy with the position of the seat, but at the moment I've removed the seat and placed an temporary thwart where the middle of the seat would be. Seems ok - is that fine.

Thanks,

Biff
Hi Biff

If you use the centre most holes for the front of the kneeling thwart and then drill some additional ones behind it for the 2nd bolts should be OK and maintain the balance of the boat.

Thanks, Graeme. I take it you mean the hole most central to the canoe - (i.e. the front of the seat)? The Mohawk has a aluminium seat hanger (as you well know), but I'm going to hang the KT from the gunnels (as discussed in previous threads). I guess I could play around with it a bit, but then the gunnels would start to resemble swiss-cheese.

(I may also get some wooden seat hangers and try that with the seat)

Cheers

Yes that would work, the you could tilt the seat and set whatever height suited Wink
Well, it's done. I've fitted an Endless River Kneeling Thwart, after a couple of coats of yacht-varnish. Had to remove the aluminium seat hangers by drilling out the three rivets holding each in place. I had thought that the hangers would have been looped over the edge of the boat, but they weren't (might be why the seats seemed low), and they came straight out with a little bit of persuasion. Replaced the rivets with some Graeme had kindly sent me, then drilled the gunnels to take the ash hangers supplied with the thwart (I'd marked the spots before removing the metal hangers).

Fixing the thwart was a bit of a struggle - I needed an extra pair of hands (need to do some more work in the radioactive lab at work ILL ), but got there in the end.

I've cushioned it using a cut-off from a camping-mat, stuck using double-sided carpet tape. Had a couple of outings joy - very comfortable on the old BTM, more so than my old arrangement. I've used more of the camping mat (with carpet tape) for kneeling on - seems to work OK.

Now, all I need is to kit some new knees.
