River Derwent Darley Abbey: Derby.
Distance: 4 miles approx. Out and back route.
Put-in/take-out/parking: Repps Staithe GPS: (lat) 52°56'34.62"N (lon) 1°28'34.20"W
Shuttle required: No shuttle required
We are heading upstream on this trip, so we have to portage a short distance from the car-park to the put-in, so a trolley may be required, unless you're feeling strong. We follow the road out of the car-park the way we came in, and the put-in is at the little village green on the right.
The launch is a precarious affair so watch tour footing, and with the weir so close it may be worthwhile to have the canoe pointing in the direction we intend to travel.

View from the put-in.
Once away from the bank and heading upstream, we soon pass beneath the small Haslam lane road bridge and leave the sound of the weir behind. Peace and quiet descends. A very peaceful river its easy to forget that you're not far from civilisation.
But our turn around point all too soon looms into view in the shape of the A38 road bridge, we're not allowed any further than this! So we must re-trace our steps, but this time the current is with us and we are soon back at take-out.
A delightful paddle. The meandering nature of the river gives a sense of distance, but is indeed no epic. Interesting to note also that this the home to the Midland Canoe Club.
