One great attraction to canoeing for me is the view of nature it allows me to see. No other form of water born vessel allows you to get up close more so than a canoe. The opportunities are rare, so crashing along you will not see anything. Slow down, quieten the stroke or drift, and you could be rewarded with a sight that you would normally not get to see.

This Grey Heron common enough I know, but let me within 10 feet before taking to the air

This Great crested grebe, usually very nervous creatures, allowed us within close enough to get some decent shots.

An inquisitive pair of Black swans, came up very close at one stage, unfortunately the close-up was out of focus.
Great pics those Nige. How come they always fly off by the time I've got my camera ready? But I agree much of the delight of paddling is the ability to get up close to nature.
Yep quite agree, to paddle along slowly and silently, one see's so much more it give one time to take in all the beauty and splendor of the Flora and Fauna, and a Nige has said its amazing how close you can
get to the wildlife, and as well as moving along slowly it is sometime a good thing to stop and take in all that nature has to offer, and somethings will not move even if you do,

Except to sway in the breeze.

And of course there is that beautiful Lady :-

"Dawn"

We are so lucky to have such an appreciation of what so many take for granted, and to quote some fine words of King George :-

" The wildlife we have today, is not ours to dispose of as we please, but to protect and preserve for those that are to come"

Best Regards Bill
Getting up close and personal with one of these when out paddling is something special.

One of our local esturies in Northumberland which I regularly paddle has a semi resident seal that thinks nothing of popping up to see who you are. This pic was taken out on the Farne Islands just up the coast. I would love to say I was sea kayaking at the time but honesty forces me to admit I was on bird watching day cruise.
