Have been thinking quite a lot recently about moving over to a Touring Kayak, Since having a go in my friend Nicks perception kiwi 3 at mordiford i can't help but feel impressed, although i fancy either Necky Looksha 14 or maybe a Venture Easky 15, Not impressed with the crappy colours available so would have to be the Looksha 14 recyled as they do them in a more suttle green. Fair size storage hatches bow and stern and like the general ease of paddleing compared to an open, Do any fellow C Wavers own Touring Kayaks and if so what are your impressions, any advice welcomed, Andy.
OMG, Andy, Andy !! what if everybody goes over to kayak's think of me where am I going to get a kayak that will take my Duluths.
Now to be serious, I can be serious you know, yeh I have always admired the big sea going kayaks, when Ive seen them at the NEC shows I have been to, and yep even thought that yeh I would like to have ago, would be good to go island hoping around the archipelago off Scotland.
Go for it mate, but dont you dare get rid of the open.
Best Regards Bill
Andy, where on earth will you rig a sail on one of them? Wink

Nige that was one of my concerns but a quick look through you tube revealed the answer, not getting rid of the open just wouldn't mind something different, also as you are aware i carry far too much clutter though not quite as much as Bill so i will have to replan my gear and skip a few comforts, Andy.

Those remarks have to be paid for, next time you come to Oakmedowford lock, will you please bring me a bag of your Woody Woodgas cut to size blocks of wood, and I just might forgive you.

Wink Can't go wrong with an 'Easky' hull shape. Good on inland waters, don't catch too many side-winds, reasonable in the surf and good in waves. A true allrounder that will glide through it all and can be pushed on, when the going gets tough.

As many on the forum know a touring kayak is what I paddle. In my case a Folbot Yukon folding kayak. A "traditional" skin on frame boat.

Designed for open water paddling it will even take a sailing rig. Heaps of room for gear and a solid stable paddle for a numpty like me. I've even been known to paddle it with a single paddle.

While it's easy to get hung up on what we paddle I'm sure it's far more important that we get out there and enjoy ourselves in whatever suits
Hey Andy
i wouldnt mind a kayak for those longer trips,
ive always fancied doing some sea touring/ wild camping,
SWMBO has a Dagger Blackwater 10.5, not the biggest kayak but if you are trimming down your kit it may well be worth a look / try, (Dagger range here) I know it says recreational but it is a fine boat that is both comfortable and capable, it laughed at 2ft sea swells, not big waves I know they were the biggest that I have took it out in. With the skeg down it felt rock solid.
The cockpit is quite large with some storage behind the seat, room for a 35ltr long dry bag between your feet and a sealed storage at the back. As I said not big but how big do you need?

Hope this helps
Cheers
Tim
Thanks for that Tim, there seems to be loads of the 10.5's around at the mo. Was thinking more along the lines of a 14-15ft kayak, been researching different makes/ models and they all seem to offer a suitable boat, would the 10.5 carry a suitable speed? it's just after a recent 15-16 mile day i was absoloutely bo tired out what with difficult wind direction an no flow on the water so thats got me thinking about touring kayaks. That and talking to a guy on the broads who paddled twice the distance as we did last year in half the time!. This is'nt the end of the open for me it's just a hopefully quicker method of getting more time on the water, Andy.
15 miles, no problem, Mandy (my wife) did a fifteen mile charity paddle I wrote an SoTP blogg on it many moons ago here
There are faster boats out there but I think the Blackwater is a good boat.
Try one.
Cheers
