yeah, that goes without saying really, the fact that in a (relatively) safe environment you can try things that you wouldn't normally try in lets say a canal, for instance heeling the boat over to the point of swamping and then flip it upright again.

you also have to take into account the weather, tide(height,flow & direction) wind direction & strength, this is were things start getting complicated. knowing the right combination for wind, tide & flow of both to help you to get from one point to another & with the knowledge of chart work & marine navigation.
I would suggest for anyone thinking of doing some coastal paddlng is to attend a shore based course, something like the RYA's dayskippers course at a local outdoor activity centre.
Axe vale cc held a sea paddling weekend last July as a memorial to the late Bob Ottley, I believe there may be a repeat this year but not sure.
It was a bit windy last year (understatement) and times I thought I would much rather be in my sea kayak, but I'll give it another go, it makes a change.
