I was full prepared to take some pictures, camera was there I was there and we had a whole hour to take them......Well here is the story....

We arrived at the swimming pool and to be honest I felt a bit like a fish out of water, do you seal launch? or climb in? I opted to climb in when a shout from across the pool "Yer not seal launchin' then?" with that how could I resist, so in I get.
I paddled around a bit its a pool, not much to look at so I splashed my way to my mate Dave who was going to try to teach me to roll. So in we go, Dave got me to turn upside down and for want of explaining too much faff about underwater to get me used to my positioning. We did some more "stuff" which ended up me drinking pool water through my nose....not nice.
All this was to build me up to a roll.
How did I get on? well to position my self for a roll paddler by my side (made awkward by beer gut short arms and hurty shoulders)
roll over,(no problem apart from water up my nose)
let yak settle (again no problem apart from water up my nose)
twist and get paddle into position (made awkward by beer gut short arms and hurty shoulders)
now the crunch here was doing it all at the right time, Flick....sweep and I was upright, Yippee my first roll.....(nearly)

I confess Dave moved my paddle a bit into the right position.
After that I tried again and again but no gain, I know where I am going wrong I am sitting upright too soon, but hey it's a start I will get there at some stage. Unfortunately the pool sessions have ended until Feb Sad Sad
Where I will be back.
Once I can roll the Yak I will work on the OC1. I know its a different technique but I will have some sort of foundation to work on.

Cheers
Tim
P.S no photo's cos the hour had passed ssssoooo fast.
So "ROLL" on February eh Tim, Nice account, Don't need photos can picture it all Hurty shoulder can understand preventing you from accomplishing the Task, short arms, well maybe, but think that the supposedly Beer Gut is an excuse to far. Now what favour did I want ??
Best Regards Bill
As Bill says, no pictures necessary Tim. Anyway, they'd only ruin the picture I've now got in my head. Big Grin

Wish I'd been there. Next time we should have a C-waV outing so's we can watch from the sides and lend encouragement...

...and take photo's Wink

Not a bad idea Nige, mebbee when the weather warms up a bit we could take a trip to Gwynant (as in the first part of the Slaughter series part deux here) for some fun wet work and general p!$$ taking, oh and some joviality around a camp fire.

Cheers

Oh dear Bill I can see you being in the oh Yes tipi Wink

Well Tim, it is normally one of those things that just falls into place, does take a bit of practice, sounds like you already have it well on its way Smile
An OC1 roll is very much the same (as long as you are doing a front deck kayak roll) just one blade to worry about Wink

I think I'm getting there Graeme, it's my final body position I feel is letting me downSpy duck too upright, but I am confidant I'll get there Wave

Front deck kayak roll? is that the one where you would be leaning forward at the end of the roll?

Yep, you should set-up and finish off leaning forward, it used to be called a 'whitewater roll', as it protects your face against rocks etc whilst rolling.

It is more common now to be taught a rear deck roll as it is easier, sadly not much use for OC1's Wink

A nose clip works wonders...there's little worse than a chlorine rush up the sinuses. If you have any of those charming travelling folk living nearby perhaps they may be able to sell you a peg for your nose and some lucky heather for the bow of the yak!

On a serious note, a diving mask is a good thing to wear when learning (not sure this would go down too well on the river though)...stops the water up the nose and allows you to see how the paddle is being positioned. The best tip I picked up when rolling was to follow the paddle down with your eyes and it drops throught he water (on a C to C roll) and this will lead to the head dropping, the hips rolling and bob's your uncle!

I have a nose clip but I didn't use it because,
