My eldest, Luke has designs on doing his one star either in an open or kayak and I think this will be a great confidence booster if he does. So to my question.
Is £90.00 the going rate for this courseQuestion

Carsington Water is the local reservoir where courses are run and I know how heavy these can be on any fees they charge, they don't however, say that hire of a vessel is included in this.

Is it normal for centres to include the boat or are we expected to supply or hire oneQuestion

Nige,
Most people don't charge young people as it is a route in to getting them onto the water. If I get my first aid cert updated I will will take him through it for his kayak and I am sure others on the site would do the same thing. You will need your jetboil for the tea though.

Take him out and make sure he can paddle forwards and backwards, understands how to do a sweep stroke, can safely fall out of a canoe in a controlled fashion and doesn't need to put his head under if under 13. Also learn the rudementary names of parts of a boat. Then next time you meet up with a crowd of paddlers someone will be able to assess him

Sean
Hi Nige

1 star now has to be done in two types of boats but if you ever on a trip with me in sure we can sort something out.

£90 is very steep and should include all equipment, what are you getting for you £90? is it just ass or coaching as well and how long?

I'm sure you can teach him all he needs to know and i can brush up strokes if needed on assessment.

Heather
Yes, £90 that is exceptionally steep.

Also, I would be interested to find out if the centre was AALA registered.

Most people I know work with youngster at cost or at cost to themselves!

Wilf
Great, thanks for the advice. He's pretty competent and is quite confident in the boat, things do go a bit wayward when theres wind though, but then again, it does for me too Big Grin.

The course at Carsington is for training as well assessment and lasts one day, But I've not managed to find out whether this includes equipment yet.

BTW welcome to the forum WilfWave

This course at Carsington is still way to dear even including equipment, we charge £50.00 a day per person including equipment on a commercial basis and that is a maximum of 1:6 coaching ratio to ensure that the candidates get quality coaching, usually it works out at 1:3 ratio as we enjoy getting out of the shop and being on the water joy Whistle

As Heather says, do some basic skills work and I am sure we can fit a training/assessment in on a meet somewhere in the not too distant for zero cost except the BCU £5.00 for the certificate Wink

Cheers Graeme
Thanks for the advice, and the offer. Will certainly be taking you up on it at a meet-up in the future.
