and i also use a roll matt and 4 season ex army olive green mummy sleeping bag.
now i have always fancied a hammock and tarp/shelter or something similar and i guess im looking at the moment for something that is reasonable quality but isnt too expensive either any ideas?
iain.
[/i]Hi Iain, Hammocking ??, two trains of thought, When, Summer or all year round, Your Roll mat will be ok, your sleeping Bag will be ok for summer, but for winter you will need to have an underblanket, and I hate to say this but a good Hammock will cost a fair bit, unless someone on Sotp or the Bushcraft site is doing a group buy. I am putting up a couple of links for you, The Just Jeff is must to read.

The last link is the one to read, load of very useful knowledge.
I have good experience of Hammocking and if I can be of any help please dont hesitate to ask, if you do get set up if you would like to join us sometime for a Hammock Camp you would be most welcome.
Best Regards Bill
Hi Iain,
As Bill said if you want a decent hammock then you'll pay for it....
Some people don't like them, but for pack size, weight and setup/take down time you can't beat them....

Go for the Exped Asym... mine was around £100.00 (oh and make sure you get snake skins for it...

)
I love mine...
Cheers

Thanks guys all the info is well appreciated I shall be delving further into all of this cheers
There's a guy on ebay called necaldi that sells insulated mosquito proof hammocks for about 30 quid. I used one at -4c a few weeks ago and have since bought a 2nd one for when i take out either of my kids. Superb hammock, which folds and zips away into itself to be the size of a laptop case. I spent about 15 quid on a used 3x3 DD tarp.
did you use it with just a slugbag?
if so was the bag down or synthetic?
and were you really warm on a cold night?
i have a hammock and have just made an underblanket from a cheapo rectabgular slugbag but it is bulky and the necaldi one with the insulation built in seems a good idea
do you know what the insulation is by any chance?and does it compress much when you sleep onit
I had a 2 season (synth) sleeping bag in a 3 season (down) sleeping bag in a bivvie bag with a duvet on top and another duvet slung underneath. I also had a zippo handwarmer between my toes and was fully dressed, so to be fair the insulation of the hammock was pretty negligable and on one night it was only about 0c so i was too hot. I had about 6" of insulation around me.
Also it wasn't in the least bit windy.
I would suggest that the insulation (quilt padding, nothing flash for that price?) wouldn't be better than your underblanket, but both together would be great. The insulation must be all of 3 mm thick. If you're not worried about the added bulk (plenty of room in my canoe for it, plus it's nice to sit on when packed up) then you could do a lot worse.
I must admit that I'm yet to see a Hennessey hammock, let alone be able to offer a comparison between these cheap and wonderful insulated jobbies and the thoroughbred, tried & tested & highly regarded Hennesseys.
btw - I'm nothing to do with necaldi or his business...
wot you need is one of these..
