Where is the best place to park the car for a few days at the Brecon basin end of the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal?

My first trip is taking shape, and I am intending to spend three or four days on the canal. Although due to the leak I guess that it is going to be a half way there and then back again trip. 1 in 4 hills and a couple of miles portage doesn't much appeal! Rolleyes

As long as the canal isn't frozen up then I should be heading over there next Wednesday (10th March).

Can't help you with the parking Rod but I hope the maiden voyage goes well for you and you discover another new passion.

Have a great trip.

Don't forget to take your camera.
Hello,

What leak ... I live in Govilon, right next to the canal and there was water when I got home this evening!!

I would suggest you park in a smaller village along the canal - Brecon is just big enough to ensure that you get stung for car parking fees / bylaws ... but you could shave a mile or a few off the distance and try Pencelli, Talybont etc ... well worth looking at the canal map to spot the best places - I'm afraid I cant get to my map at the moment.

Happy paddling!
I like the word "passion" Smile

Some would say that I am obsessive, many would call me compulsive, and even my wife says that I am on the autistic continuum. Many would call me eccentric. So "passion" is good.

My new tent arrived today, just by coincidence of course. So I'm now rarin' to go! Heck... I may not even wait until next Wednesday. All I need now is some food, so I'll go shopping in the morning, and then I'm all set.

It will be a maiden voyage for the canoe.... and for me too!
Lots to learn. Smile

Apparrently...
"The canal has been drained between bridges 116 (the Ffyddog) to 118 (the Dardy) for urgent repair work, (it's leaking again). British Waterways have also shut the towpath along this section. Portage between between 116 to 118 is possible, the put-in/take-outs are:

116. Trundle through Llangattock, past 'The Rectory Golf Club', up the 1:4 road for 80m and put-in on south side of bridge. There is very little parking available nearby.
117. No public access
118. Trundle up road to the 'Dardy' and put-in on south/north side of bridge. There is little parking available here."
The alternative would be to put in at Llangattock and leave the car there, and then head south towards Gilwern and Govilon and onwards.

The disadvantage is that there doesn't appear to be proper camp sites from Llangattock onwards, so I may have to "improvise".

Has anyone camped on that section?

Hello Rod,

Nice to meet you earlier. I will have an ask around to see where might be useful for a discreet camp.

Tim
Nice to meet you too Tim.
The only canoe that I saw all day was this one right on your doorstep.
