outrigger mk2 was superb, having just used it to paddle from Devizes to Hungerford. During the trip me and my mate fled from attacking swans, ran the Bruce tunnel and caught a 20.5Lb carp! it's so nice being able to reach behind you and have a good rummage through your pack, step in and out of the canoe without any thought for balance etc...

Sadly the 8 layers of yarnish over a bedsheet didn't stand up to submerged debris and all those (30 odd) portages.

So I'm going to make a plaster mould and then fibreglass myself the mk3!

one main question, if you have time or knowledge enough to help me...

I have a source for some 225g glass mat. how many layers do you reckon I need to make the outrigger as thick as my apache - approx 2mm?

I'm told I need approx 500g of resin per square metre per layer - true?
Hopefully ApacheStu will be along to help with this one....

Any chance of some photo's and a blog for Devises to Hungerford.... That carp sounds a bit of a monster....Cool

That would be amusing, and advice doesn't get much better than that!

I'll do a blog when my mate facebooks me the photos. my phone died en route so have lost some snaps...
Hi Petey

i have a selection of mat that would suit ( and it will be cheaper than anyone else Wink give me a ring and i will sort it

you will need some soft wax for the plaster mould ,mat/resin for the grp mould ( unless you build your plaster mould inside out ...very difficult)and then you can use csm or woven mat for the outrigger .

it doesn't have to be as thick as the Apache hull , they are built to that thickness to support the boat and the weight you put in plus they dont want too flex too much ( they could be made a good 10kg lighter but they would be prone to oilcanning and flexing )

a couple of layers of woven mat would do with a little reinforcment round the mountings would suffice

cheers
