on this pic notice the large crack on right hand side

The crack on the outside of the hull

not looking to pretty on the outside
[Image: 105.jpg]

So that was the canoe before restoration so time to get to work i peeled of the old resin and sanded down to the bare wood
[Image: 110.jpg]
here in this picture i am using resin to seal the crack allowing to dry and sanding down again
[Image: 111.jpg]
The darker areas is the old epoxy resin
[Image: 115.jpg]

This is where the crack was as you can see you could never tell
[Image: 116.jpg]

since all the sanding has been done on the wood it is now time to apply the chopped strand matt and polyester resin

In this picture you can see half the canoe covered in CSM and resin and half sanded down and also my friend giving me a hand to apply
[Image: 119.jpg]
one side complete time to start the other
[Image: 122.jpg]

that is the canoe finish with CSM and polyester resin and a tissue layer with Polyester resin again and left to dry

once dry time to sand down to make the hull smooth

you will notice the resin is now turning white with the sanding

the small dots that are not white are layers that are shallower so you have to sand down to them to make all hull smooth this takes alot of time

This is what your looking for

now the front is smooth i got some clear spraypaint and applied to the smoothed resin and below is finished look

as you can see the finish looks amazing now just to do the rest of canoe
[Image: 142.jpg]

once finished i took to the union canal for a test float and a quick paddle first time the canoe had been in water since 1994 16 years

hope you enjoyed the pics and the story of how the ossian was picked up and restored and back in the water where she belongs after 16 years
Most excellent Scotty, a fine job...

Brilliant that she's been given a new lease of life rather than going for kindling....joy

Thanks for taking the time to post up the story...

Hopefully the Ossian will be able to grace us with her presence at the End of Summer meet, if not before....joy

Cheers
Red.
unfortunatly she had a sister who i did not get to in time the other owner had already used herscare as kindlinscare

but the ossian was saved and i shall keep her aslong as i can and shall treat her well

and hope she can make the meet aswell as myselfjoyjoyjoy
To stuff Scotty, thanks for posting. Always a pleasure to read and look over someone else's hard work, She looks a treat!

If you do as Red suggests and attend the EoSM we could reinstate that Celtic knotwork for you. Wink
Just one question Scotty,

Do you know the background behind her name, it sounds as if it might be interesting...Question

It sounds Viking like...

Cheers
Red.

A genny could be a distinct possibility, just need to have a word with Tony, but we could always do it the old way.... Campfire , not sure that Scotty would trust us though.... Tongue

Scotty, the blog from last year's EoSM TT is here there's a focus on Demonstrations/Talks, and we're hoping to get something a little special arranged for this year's....Wink

Cheers
Red.
I wouldn't try pyrography on the glassed wood - I did that once it's not nice Campfire- horrid fumesbleep - but stenceling it back in would be ok.

(oops - leting out my secret pastimes!)

Hi, Scottydog.

That's a fantastic job done there - hard work by the looks, but paid dividends at the end. She was well worth saving, and you have given her a new lease of life. Long may you paddle her.

Cheers

Biff
