Canoe with a View : : Canadian Open Canoe forum

My girlfriend and I are planning to get a canoe soon. We will need to transport it over large distances and we currently own a VW polo 4door. I have concerns about being able to fit a large 2 person canoe on the roof.

Its a 4door hatchback and the canoe we plan to get is an 'old town guide 147'

Does anybody transport a canoe on the roof of a small car? If so, how small a car and how big is the canoe.

There is no problem transporting a canoe on a small car as long as you adhere to the legal requirements, you are allowed a metre overhang without any additional markers, anymore than that then you need to have a hi-vis marker, longer than 2 metres then you are into the light scenario.

There should be no problem carrying up to a 16' boat on your car and being legal.

I take it you have looked at all the boats on the market before choosing a boat?

I have a Citroen C3 4 door and I generally have a 15" or 16" open canoe on the roof not a problem.

Three 15ft open boats on my car, we could have squeezed a yak on I suppose...

You'll be more than fine with the boat on top of the Polo, follow the rules as Graeme states above and invest in a top quality rack...

I've often taken two boats on the roof of my 1991 Honda civic. And four passengers and enough camping gear for a week.





I've now got to fit a Yak inside the Disco158

Piece of cake! And if you don't think we take a lot of gear my husband once also brought a 50 lb bag of potatoes along with two young kids and a weeks worth of gear because you just never know when you might need it!



16' canoe and plan on modifying the roof racks to fit another.

Come on fellas - play the game - of course you NEED a bigger car to carry the canoe - a nice comfortable estate car or Landrover would be ideal!

and if anyone tells Mrs Deepkeel otherwise - I'll need deep cover!

i regularly drive with either one or more canoes on my roof or if the roof is full then its down to the trailer

I get teased at work regularly with the canoe on the car. You know the ole "hey if you flip over at the lake with the canoe on you'll be just fine".

Just bought 15/16 foot pelican.
Is it best to use roof rack or can I use the supplied 'footpads' directly onto the roof of the car (a VW golf by the way)
