I saw this on you tube and wondered what people thought?

I can see that these take up a lot of space but on the other hand they do seem to make self rescue a bit easier.

Look like a good idea, depends on how much you need to carry in the boat.... I wouldn't want them in there if I was tripping, as you say, they'd take up too much space...
