Following on from Retro's thread on Favourite UK paddling place, I thought I'd ask what places are at the top of peoples' must paddle lists? Doesn't have to be the in UK - could be Canada, the U.S. or anywhere.

The Great Glen is my ultimate goal but for an entire month off work you'd find me in the Broads! Big Grin
On my "in your dreams" list it has to be first Sweden (I have hidden agendas), secondly Canada. Now seeings I don't possess a passportSad I'll stick to the UK and Scotland is high on the agenda of must do places to paddle, so come September Wink

Nige.
For me its got to be the lakes in southern NZ

The arctic circle. Total solitude, and who else has paddled there? not many I bet.
Rolleyes Patagonia - N.Z. - Iceland - The Sea of Tranquility, (doubt there's much water but the journey would be out of this world).

TGB
Would love to paddle the river Amazon from close to source as possible down to the sea. Would love to see and camping in the rainforest and then see the marginal waters and mangrove swamps.

You can get fairly cheap holidays in the Amazon delta with traditional tribes but getting theres a bit of a pig. I was talking to a chap who runs environmental holidays and you get to stay in their lodges and they can arrange specific guides - I wanted one for trees - but the thing that amused me was that on a week holiday or so it took one day to fly to Brazil (international), then 4 hours to fly form there to the local airstrip, then another 6 hours by motorised canoe followed by a 30 minute walk to the lodge, Now that's remote!!

That sounds like a fantastic holiday, one for the single man though. Don't forget to pack plenty of Immodium Big Grin I dare say even there you would be treated as royalty.

I Know this is an old thread, but I have climbed Mitre Peak which is centre just left. Milford Sound.
Right, Dreams first of where I would love to paddle, joy CANADA, I would love to set off on a journey and it take as long as it takes, I wonder if any one else feels the same as me about doing a long journey,Question Question, do I go alone,? or with a friend?, would be interested to find out from other members how they would like to travel.
I will give you my views for such a journey, I like my own company, BUT! not for to long, REASON,! to really enjoy something to its fullest extent I have to share my joyjoy with someone.joy
"Does that make sense to anyone"????except me????
One more point making a long trip say to Sweden, How many of you would opt for :- Plane journey out there, Hire all kit canoes and everything. OR, how many of you are like me and would want to travel out there by land and sea, and to take all my own Equipment (yes even my Duluth Packs)Tongue and my canoe, and just buy fresh provisions as and when required, and given the right tools, provide your self with food.
Right that about covers the Dream bit.Whistle
Now to reality, places that I would like to paddle this year, Loch Lomond, had to cancel last year, probable other Lochs as well.
The lakes again, The Dee, The Trent, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Rudyard, The Cauldon Canal, some lakes in Wales, already looking forward to Balajoy
Will be quite happy to do all of those this year, and its doable, God willing and all that.Best laid plans of mice and men, as well.
Well that's it folks, will be interested to read your comments on my serious questions," I wait with baited breath"
REGARDS Bill ( just a simple Mountain Man )

I'm hoping to spend the whole summer in Canada in 2012 (it will be my half century present to myself)!

I spent a month almost in Sweden 2006. I took two clients plus an assistant out on the ferry from Newcastle to Gothenburg then drove up to central Sweden. We took everything inc: Exped kit, boats, All Food and beverage.

Expected prices of food etc to be high, turned out to be about the same as UK when we did supplement our larder. Fuel was similar price back then too. Boat and kit hire can be competative though. if and when I go again, I will do the same and take everything with me. Flexibility really, the first river we looked at was a bit too flat and un-interesting (we had gone for a long WW trip) although in my research it did say G2! Having a car and our own kit meant we could travel to alternative venues and be our own bosses.

If you want someone to go with and either a mix of WW and lakes or just a WW trip Bill, lets put a trip together.

I might be going to either Norway or Sweden in August with some of my VI formers from school - not got the funding yet though Whistle

on a more realistic note i plan to paddle the loire at some point as its navigable for powered boats for 1000k so should be much further by canoe and would make an excellent trip in june/july or september
and its only just across the water
