I've been thinking about taking our best camera on the boat with us. It's a Nikon D40 with two lenses. I don't know if I should use an Aquapac slr case or a Pelicase. I'd still need a waterproof case for the second lens & it would probably be abit awkward changing lenses with the aquapac. A Pelicase would be easier but I'm not sure on the size I would need or to buy new or second hand. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Terry,
I use a Pelicase 1400, I ordered it with the foam as it's pre cut so easy to get the shapes you want.
The 1400 takes my 500D with standard lens, a 70-300, a wide angle and spare batteries easily.
I shaped the foam so that the body can be stored with any of the lenses fitted, and find that for canoeing the 70-300 is the one that's used the most.
I find changing lenses while in the boat quite easy.
Cheers
Red.
Thanks Red I nearly went for the 1150, glad I asked first.
Thanks for the info Red, I've been thinking about getting a Peli for my 500D with the Sigma 10-20 and Canon 55-250 zoom as well, but without hearing someone elses tales it's difficult to get a feel for the size - I'll now look for the best price!
I did borrow an Aquapac from a friend but didn't really use it - I'm never too sure that adding a couple of non-optical glass surfaces will do anything for the quality of the final image. The risk of course with the Peli is that you have to expose ALL the gear whilst opening the case, but if all the gear is in the kit bag chances are you'll never use it!!

I'll post up a photo of the layout that I use tonight, I can store the camera with any of the lenses fitted so I don't have to keep changing them around to get the case shut...
I don't find opening the case an issue, as I don't open it unless I'm on flat water, and I ALWAYS make sure the bow paddler is told not to move a muscle when the camera is out....
Cheers

Pele case, my aquapack split after a year, could have been costly....
cheers
Tim
Ok I've jumped in the deep end and bought a Peli Case 1400 - with the foam.
Now, decisions, decisions, how do I arrange the layout to suit a Canon 500D and three lenses. Red, did you ever get around to uploading a picture of your layout??
I finally decided to get one as a couple of things have happened recently;
1; My eldest son had all his Camera gear nicked from his hotel in France while attending at a conference.
2. While talking to a well known Coach over the weekend who uses one for his gear, he said that he chains his up inside his car and this has prevented his stuff being nicked before - also it is also strong enough to be run over by a Land Rover - no Tim and Dave, I don't need volunteers to test the theory
So, if I'm staying in a Hotel or it's in the back of the car I could lock it to a fixture and always take a bag for day to day use - If I'm in the boat the gear is with me but totally waterproof!!
Thanks to all for the advice,
Graham.
Starting on the pluck and pull foam is almost as stressful as drilling the first hole in a boat when lacing it.. Almost, but not quite!!
Cheers,
Graham.
Here you go Graham....
The long lens lives in the right "cut out" unless it is on the body, in which case the normal lens moves there.
The wide angle lives in the bottom cut out, unless it is on the body, in which case the the normal lens moves there...
I went right through the pre-cut foam for all, and put a little bit back in for the long lens...
Cheers
Red.
Thanks Red, much appreciated!
Graham
