Our planned escape on the Friday night never got off the ground as work chose to be t bleep ts as usual so my early start was scuppered.
Instead James and I headed North on the Saturday morning with Sam and Shannon in tow to see if we could catch up with some of the CWaV crew who were meeting up for a w/ends instruction with Kim at Hexham. We quickly spotted them on the water and went to introduce ourselves before the lure of the River became too much and my canoe tasted the waters of the Tyne for the 1st time. joy Having sat on the outside of the group and listened in I can't wait to get signed up with Kim for one of his courses. After a pleasant couple of hours we headed off to camp for the night on a small farm on Hadrian's wall where we pitched the 2 man tent for the girls as I'd promised James he could sleep "Under the Canoe." James and I then rigged the tarp for the 1st time.

Needless to say James appeared to approve and was out like a light. He never moved all night though I did wake very early to see what looked like a very large cat sniffing around the site which legged it pretty sharpish when I moved. After that I didn't really get off again but saw a beautifull dawn.

Sunday morning saw us heading back to Hartlepool to drop off Sam and Shannon, before James and I headed down to start our holiday at the now familiar Frodingham Landing where we spent a couple of nights with a visit to my parents. We had intended doing a long trip but the weather forecast of strong winds and rain for the entire week put paid to that and I decided to just play it by ear.

As members of the Camping and Caravaning Club I was aware of their Canoe Camping Club which coincidently were meeting at Malton to paddle the Derwent the next weekend and having spoken to Cherry on the phone I decided to go along and have a look. Whilst they were not arriving untill the Friday night I took James and all the gear on the Tuesday and having introduced myself to the land owner pitched up on the river bank and tried out tarp pitching style number 2. [Image: IMGP0770.jpg]
James and I settled in and had a stonking great stew,
[Image: IMGP0771.jpg]
followed by large chunks of chocolate. joy
That night the strong winds we'd been promised arrived and we woke to find the tarp 200yds down the field, thankfully un-damaged though the poles had snapped and everything was in a right tangle. mad Byy the time we'd sorted out the mess the tent itself was threatening to blow away scare and we moved pitch to try to gain a little shelter.
This time the Tarp was left in the bag, though we did pitch a double guyed windbreak, which hurled itself 300yds down the field that night but took the kelly kettle. coleman and Yukon and everything else with it. bleepbleepbleepbleepbleep pretty much sums up that evening! The weather made paddling a no go so I spent a great if rather wet day at Eden camp.

We were to move pitch twice more before we found a sheltered spot on the Friday morning at which point the wind dropped. mad Up to now apart from a quick splash the weekend before the canoe hadn't even touched the water but I'd had a lot of camp pitching experience Sad and with Sam and Shannon joining us for the W/end and with more rain forecast I was well chuffed with my latest attempt at pitching the tarp. joy

Friday also saw the arrival of 4 more canoes and 3 kayaks. Introductions were made and plans for the morning start were put foreward. Our put in was to be at the rear of the Providence Pub in a village whose name I've forgotten Dunce some 13 miles up stream from our camp. Whilst the stream was with us, the wind was not and at times making headway was very hard and we were forced to halt when driving rain made making further progress virtually impossible. No photographs were possible at this stage either and we were pretty fed up. True to form though we carried on once the rain stopped,

Here prior experience on the part of John and Margaret led us through a silted up channel into a sheltered lagoon for a lunch break with much hilarity as a paddler attempted to walk over the surface of knee deep thick black mud, and failed. (No names, but it wasn't me :joySmile

Lunch stop in lagoon.

All in all a fantastic trip if rather hard work. James in paticular was very impressed with the very very dead calf trapped in a fallen tree which stank to hight heaven. Sad Will definately repeat this river when I get the chance. Special thanks to the members of the CCC who made us so welcome. Mike

A very enjoyable TT Mike, and great photos.

A memorable trip indeed, no time to relax with the weather keeping you on your toes, glad it worked out in the end and you managed to get the bottom wet.

Eden camp looks an interesting place, nice shot of the V1 doodlebug.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. Spot on! Smile

Hi Ric, How's it going Matey? Re' the KK with no cork. Have found it marginally slower to boil but a hell of a lot less painfull. It's becoming evident I'll carry the evidence of that bit of stupidity for a very long time. I fear my days as a leg double for Elle Macpherson may sadly be over, Sad James just wanted to ride on the Doodle Bug but then he is a little odd Devil Whilst we camped last week there were a number of people shooting in the woods. Every time there was a shot, James would cry with gusto........"And another bunny rabbit for the pot!"
I was howling. joy joy He was most put out that having let him pick out the Rainbow trout we had for tea, I didn't let him gut it and remove his head! Big Grin I have real trouble believing he's not yet 4 years old. Cool Take care Mate and see you soon. Mike.
