on monday night i met up with my new paddle buddy at frodingham for an evening paddle
we where in the water by 18:30 we passed a couple in a canadian and paddled to the end of the beck where it joins the navigation canal and turned right up the stretch towards brigham we where treat to a nice air display by a solo typhoon which
was very loud, it circled for a few minutes then disapeared into the clouds & away
it was just around the next bend when we bumped into mickfinn's cygnets, the cob looked well annoyed with us although its quite wide here we portaged around them to keep the peace (i always feel vunerable in a kayak as you are quite low down)
the water under the bridge at brigham was crytsal clear and has a chalky coloured bottom making it easy to spot fish some quite large i think thay may be grayling
the next bend is usually a good spot to see a kingfisher but unfortunately not this time, we carried on up towards snakeholme lock where the weed is very bad but the water is still crystal clear
we got out for a leg stretch and checked out the lock, these where made for the humber keels 61' long & 14'2" wide although a fixed bridge over the back of the lock limits headroom to around 6-7 foot
we took a steady paddle back wondering where we would meet the swans again, they hadn't moved very far so we ran the gauntlet close to the opposite bank, as it turns out the cob was all hiss, as we paddled away he got all brave then went back to his brood
we arrived back at the wharfe by 20:55 just as it started to spit with rain
total wildlife spot
pike
grayling
barn owl x2
cob & pen with 6 cygnets
heron x2
various ducks & water fowl
a fantastic place to paddle, i have now done nearly all driffield to the humber albeit in sections
